well with some year of working on unix based ones here is the result :> : 1) any redhat based linuxes are shitty ( fedora , redhat , redhat enterprise , centos ) but new versions of redhats comes with high level security keep that in mind ! 2) if you need a highly stable unix go to www.freebsd.org I have seen this os for many big companies ie yahoo , hint : 5.2.1 is really stable 3) if you are searching for best and the fastest linux my recomendation would be the linux I am using right now ! : root@c0d3r:~# cat /etc/slackware-version Slackware 10.1.0 root@c0d3r:~# yea Patrik Volkerding and his team after years of work maid one of the most stable linux ever released . hint : slackware 10.2.0 has just released ! hint 2 : compile the new kernel (2.6.13) your speed will be almost twice :P !!! 4) if you want a fully customized linux you will go for gentoo , consider you should sit like 1-2 day to install it in a way you want . and be a linux advanced user then go for gentoo 5) I havent worked with others like debian and suse in detail ( the cause is I didnt like em when I installed em ! )

Well, if you dont have any linux experiance, try running fedora core, its easy to use, you will have no problems at installing, with that "anaconda-installer", you dont have to install any kde or so, it comes with kde... you will like it, and then when you feel ready, install something better, i would recommend Debian, just download the CD1 iso, it will install the base system... for debian, i can say its easy to maintain, secure, raliable, you will like it... About slackware.. well i dont like that destro at all, i dont like the package system, ive seen many people say that its hard, its maybe becouse they are used to knppix, or someother user-friendly distro... So imo get debian... =P

Another one that is somewhat easy if your a beginner is called Ubuntu linux, they have a live cd and an install cd. Seems like they have a good forum and a good starter guide. They will even ship official cd's to you for free... Just look up ubuntu in google and you will find it easily enough. I'm testing it on another hard drive but really haven't had as much time to play with it as I would like.

pure32 have you ever tried slackware in detail ? simple to say I have tried compiling new kernel many times on many distros on Fedora 4 it took me about 11 mins to compile a 2.6 kernel in Mansrake was better it took about 9 mins in slackware it took about 7 mins . anyway I dont think unix should be user friendly . installing an X server will *censored**censored**censored**censored* up with your linux ( I am speaking in general not for a desktop user ) btw I know what class is going to do with his linux , vulnerabilities and exploit dev for sure and slackware rulz in this area . easy linux doesnt mean the best linux , it means a good linux for a not-ever-used-linux user , advance user requiers advance distro , my taste is slackware and gentoo so I vote for them :) gonna update my slackware BrB !!!

My fav is WHAX , it's a pentesting distro based on slax (live slackware). Has almost everyhitng you could wish for and what is'nt there you can add (installs to hard disk too) For non-pentesting FreeBSD 5.2 . love freebeastie.

Linux DVD1 burned with: GENTOO 2005.1 SLACKWARE 10.2 FREEBSD 5.4 REDHAT 4 DEBIAN should be enough I think , too many linux distros are around hehe.
