I use symantec at the moment but I definately don't think it's the best.
There are a lot of things that it doesn't detect that a lot of other antivirus software detects.

Kaspersky detects a lot of stuff but it seems like a memory hog at times.
but I dl the trial of kaspersky to use when I think my pc's are infected with something symantec doesn't catch.
It almost always finds way more than symantec.

Kaspersky, it doesn't detect everything in the wild but a lot. Compared to other AV's it's way above average.

symantec, once you mod something it gets through..

I have never tried sophos so I can't really judge about it.

Why did you only limit it to 3 AV's when there are a lot more?

class101
01-09-05, 22:44
Why those 3 ? because Im sure they are the bests on the market yet, symantec detects many things but its too easy to mod the binary to make it undetectable, sophos detects a lot of virus and they have harder signatures to tricks, kaspersky because I did notice that they share their db with fsecure etc, I think many db are based on the kaspersky work... the others bullgard, bullshit, bitdefender, it sounds gey and I don't think really they bit those 3.
Maybe Im wrong but I doubt else explain in what bitdefender, tegam, mcafee, etc consultants are never nor rarely in the news ?

I like kaspersky because they do find everything, personally i dont use any antivirus myself, because i run windows in vmware only on my ibook, and all my other machines are freebsd, or slackware. However, I would like Panda Software if their client were so goddamned bloated. Symantec is utter garbage considering you can just pack and encrypt the virii and bet your dollar it will not be detected.

theres another reason why Ive voted for kapersky and not for the others. Kapersky run his agent as system and the service cannot be stopped with a simple net stop. It's the only AV in this list which do this.

Kaspersky for sure, takes not many cpu usage, and for me it finds loads of spybots wich are very dangerous at the moment, because of the many flaws in windows os.

cheers , I always love free stuff for personal use and it is the only one I dont feel any antivirus activity ( cause it doesnt eat cpu , memory etc .. )

I use clamav /w my mail server at home but don't really run a AV since I'm using linux. At work we use avast. I really like the ability to push out updates.

"Antivir" and "NOD 32",,, I think nod 32 is the most powerful :)

however i'll vote for Kaspersky in this case

I use nod32, very nice virusscanner, updates like 3 times a day (without notice, it just says when its done) and automatically scans all e-mails coming in through mozilla thunderbird... ánd its very light on system usage.

Look this, a bit funny for "Symantec" popularity:

http://class101.org/viewtopic.php?p=1131#1131

we hope it will be undetected a long time.

but what have you done to hide dfind for norton

On VS2005, had nothing to do to trick it, but I went back yesterday to VC6 to use the old MFC to have a smaller and stable 32-bit binary and it was again detected by symantec, I have sorted out the detected signature:

it was detecting one of the word "VULNERABILITY..:", have replaced all occurences by "VULN...........:", and Symantec does no more detects it, to show you how bad is symantec, they are detecting a lot of stuffs, but it's based on noobie's signatures ....

i've never heard of sophos...

I actually prefer F-secure for some reason - it uses the same dbs as kaspersky so detection is just as good

suxac

I think Kaspersky is the best atm but sophos is a good AV too...Maybe Kaspersky needs more resorces of ram and cpu (never installed Sophos).
Norton isn't an antivirus...he doesn't find anything...blah!

None of em above... all to easy to avoid detection.

nod32 is nais ok... but best scanner today is G-Data Anti_Viren_Kit_2006 it has a very good heuristic-search plus kaspersyk plus bitdefender engine in one machine. ... thats really hard to fool ;)

I was used to host Symantec on my machine for my past experiences. Infact I had Kaspersky AV on computers in a LAN and got the Netsky wirus spreading all over the LAN, making fun of the Kaspersky AV. When I installed Norton, it did recognize and block the virus.

Nowadays I heard situation is pretty different. Symantec is easy to fool indeed and infact I tried ClamAV which is not good according to me for Windows product. It doesn't recognize so many hostile files. F-Secure is the best choice for quality/price and it does share its db with Kaspersky guys.

NOD32 I heard is good enough especially for home users.

@class101:

You forgot to mention the Trend Micro Officescan which is a very good AV according to me.

He's right! Trend Micro Officescan can be stopped with Net Stop.
Symantec Norton can be stopped with Net Stop.

I tested these once only

My 2 cents

Yog
ClamAV can bill stopped with Net Stop.

NOD32 For Me :]

class101
03-05-06, 22:54
yes now Im on win2003 with NOD32 , I like it , very excellent one , I won't bother to add it in the poll but is so far enough good to be in the poll.
CPU usage at least , NOD32 beat them all, application interface same,
detection I think kaspersky should be better.

I vote NOD32 now and very cheap.

Yeah I've already tried NOD32 also recently, good one which doesn't uses a lot of CPU resources and it seems to have good detection results. But KAV looks a bit better to me with its ProActive detections, custom rules etc you can survey all the registry activity for example, but badly setup you can break the system so :x
At least when a friend as a virus prob and he want me to look at it , I use to install KAV + adaware first and it most likely fixes the virus/spywares problems.
