View Full Version : Linux distributions
Hello guys, if there is any person experienced here with linux, thanx to let me know which distrib are too bad to look , wich are good , etc , thx.
I think to try gentoo or redhat, let me know your feedbacks.
well with some year of working on unix based ones here is the result :> :
1) any redhat based linuxes are shitty ( fedora , redhat , redhat enterprise , centos )
but new versions of redhats comes with high level security keep that in mind !
2) if you need a highly stable unix go to www.freebsd.org (http://www.freebsd.org) I have seen this os for many big companies ie yahoo , hint : 5.2.1 is really stable
3) if you are searching for best and the fastest linux my recomendation would be the linux I am using right now ! :
root@c0d3r:~# cat /etc/slackware-version
Slackware 10.1.0
root@c0d3r:~#
yea Patrik Volkerding and his team after years of work maid one of the most stable linux ever released .
hint : slackware 10.2.0 has just released !
hint 2 : compile the new kernel (2.6.13) your speed will be almost twice :P !!!
4) if you want a fully customized linux you will go for gentoo , consider you should sit like 1-2 day to install it in a way you want . and be a linux advanced user then go for gentoo
5) I havent worked with others like debian and suse in detail ( the cause is I didnt like em when I installed em ! )
forgot to say
slackware linux is called hacker's OS
ok thx you man , will try many versions under vmware.
btw update your slackware , 10.2 is out :)

Well, if you dont have any linux experiance, try running fedora core, its easy to use, you will have no problems at installing, with that "anaconda-installer", you dont have to install any kde or so, it comes with kde... you will like it, and then when you feel ready, install something better, i would recommend Debian, just download the CD1 iso, it will install the base system... for debian, i can say its easy to maintain, secure, raliable, you will like it...
About slackware.. well i dont like that destro at all, i dont like the package system, ive seen many people say that its hard, its maybe becouse they are used to knppix, or someother user-friendly distro...
So imo get debian... =P
Another one that is somewhat easy if your a beginner is called Ubuntu linux, they have a live cd and an install cd.
Seems like they have a good forum and a good starter guide.
They will even ship official cd's to you for free...
Just look up ubuntu in google and you will find it easily enough.
I'm testing it on another hard drive but really haven't had as much time to play with it as I would like.
pure32 have you ever tried slackware in detail ?
simple to say I have tried compiling new kernel many times on many distros
on Fedora 4 it took me about 11 mins to compile a 2.6 kernel
in Mansrake was better it took about 9 mins
in slackware it took about 7 mins .
anyway I dont think unix should be user friendly .
installing an X server will *censored**censored**censored**censored* up with your linux ( I am speaking in general not for a desktop user )
btw I know what class is going to do with his linux , vulnerabilities and exploit dev for sure and slackware rulz in this area . easy linux doesnt mean the best linux , it means a good linux for a not-ever-used-linux user , advance user requiers advance distro , my taste is slackware and gentoo so I vote for them :)
gonna update my slackware BrB !!!
My fav is WHAX , it's a pentesting distro based on slax (live slackware).
Has almost everyhitng you could wish for and what is'nt there you can add (installs to hard disk too)
For non-pentesting FreeBSD 5.2 . love freebeastie.
Linux DVD1 burned with:
GENTOO 2005.1
SLACKWARE 10.2
FREEBSD 5.4
REDHAT 4
DEBIAN
should be enough I think , too many linux distros are around hehe.
gentoo is a good choice ;)
but if you want to try linux you should use fedora core it's very easy to use and most of the important things are importet
okok fedora also added thx :D
no problem ;)
it's my own experience
btw. the install of gentoo is hard you don't have to click anywhere but you have to work in the console ^^
do I really need so the 4CD of fedora?
found a fast mirror for the DVD version, 1h to have it , super fast :)

Well, i havent installed it at home to see whats all about, ive used it around 10 times tho, on friends servers, i didnt like it alot, maybe becouse im used to debians package system... dunno realy
hello from fedora core 4 ;)
True that's simple to install , but maybe to simple if you want to understand how is working linux .. :)
mh sure but if you want to install gentoo you must print the handbook first because you don't have a gui like @fedora core and you have to compill it @fedora it's always compilled but @gentoo it takes round about 9 hours to install it ;)
whax 3.0 is an easy to you live distro, based on slackware. i think its a good choice if you take whax to have a look at linux. you can install whax to hd too.
many sploits and pentest tools are included.
Fedora may be a bit too noobish so that's not the best distro to understand linux as u said.
Ubuntu is nice, and even i that got 0 experience must admit that it's not really difficult.
I've also tried slackware but i have to admit that i like ubuntu more ...
Best way is to try different distributions to see which one suits u best
Nice to see there are other people around using that live distro. It's very good for pen-testing and it's stable enough to be loved.
Redhat is quite shitty and should be consider for beginners.
Suse sucks according to my tastes.
Debian is a good distro, it is just not often updated (just think the Sarge version was 3 years old when they released the new version.
slackware is definitively a good, well balanced distro... though not for beginners.
FreeBSD is still the best choice ever but....it's NOT Linux!!! :D
Make your choice class! :)
Yog-Sotho
I would recommend Gentoo
Itīs difficult to build it but the reward is very big 8)
