im not exactly sure what to do. i read in the forum that it is a simple buffer overflow. and i know for a fact just by looking at it its vulnerable. but i cant input anything into the program, for perl is disabled. and just saying something ex. ./vuln.exe hello doesnt work.. some im kinda lost can anyone help me?

sorry, the apfel wargame is a buffer overflow wargame. I know basic buffer overflows and stack overflows. but, the techniques ive seen used in the multiple papers ive read dont work on this one. The perl command is also disabled and i cant use the perl command in GDB. so i dont know what i could do?

Why don't you exploit real software ? ..those litle programs are a waste of time.

well thats the thing, i think the only real way to learn is by atleast xploiting simple BoF. what do u mean by "actual" software, what good would exploiting software on my own PC be anyway?

If you want to learn relaying on the various exploitation papers you can find on the web, I'd suggest you to try them firstly on Windows 2000 or WinXP SP1, because they were wrote for theses OS and the new systems like vista has some new protections which aren't very well documented on papers yet and you'll need in most case huge skill to understand how to bypass. WIn2k is the easiest cheese where to practice about exploits, so far :)
